THE EAGLE FEATHER
Eagle feathers are very sacred objects in the Native North American tradition. To receive an eagle feather is a great honor in the tradition and it means that the receiver has been recognized by the Spirit and by spiritual people, that he or she did something spiritually important and served unconditionally the Mother Earth and the People.
Eagle feathers are used in prayers, in healing, to receive and to give spiritual guidance and in the ceremonies. In traditional teaching, when somebody holds an eagle feather he or she is instantly recognized by the Spirit and a spiritual connection is made to the Great Spirit through the spirit of the eagle. Eagle’s spiritual mission is to carry the prayers to the Great Spirit and to help us to remember and to realize our highest spiritual vision as a human being, and to find love through acceptance and forgiveness in life.
Eagles are amongst the largest birds on earth and use less energy to fly than any other birds. Eagle flies in circles and by using the air currents can fly the highest in the sky, the closest to the Grandfather Sun. Eagle nests high, free from fear and have the best vision amongst all earth creatures and have the broadest picture. Eagles’ live with the same mate for life, they take turns to take care of their eggs and both parents teach their young ones to fly and to hunt.
Eagle is one of the greatest spiritual helpers; healer, teacher and guide in the Native North American tradition. Eagle sits in the Eastern Door on the Medicine Wheel, where the Grandfather Sun begins his sacred walk across the sky, where our spiritual and physical journey as a human being on Earth also begins. We come from the spirit World with a sacred mission, a sacred vision to realize in each life time. Eagle is the key holder to that spiritual memory and the guardian and helper to those high spiritual dimensions.
Without the Great Spirit’s unconditional love, without the loving light of the Grandfather Sun, the loving nourishment of the Mother Earth, we can’t exist. Our heart and our relationships without true unconditional love are empty and our soul, our life is filled up with complicated burdens. We carry many of those heavy burdens through life and eagle can guide and help us to lift those burdens and can teach us how to truly love life and creation and how to fly with the Spirit.
